About

“Steven LeRoy?!!!……time to come home!!!!!!

And so it was, a day’s full of hard play would come to an end

with the inevitable call by Mom to head home.

Ah Mom!!!…I would reply to no avail….just five more minutes!….

How often I think about my life growing up in a typical middle class home.

The sites, sounds, events and things that bring forth memories

of an American life.

It always amazes me just what will trigger those thoughts of times past.

Everyday life interpersed with ordinary living, domestic chores, and

the occasional interesting event and special family times.

The event of our first dishwasher, the new color TV, the

change out from the HiFi to the new stereo, and the new car.

The new car was great, but it couldn’t take the place of

the 55′ Ford pick-up.

It would rumble down the road and those were the days when

kids and dogs could ride in the back with the wind blowing

through their hair.

Dad and Mom worked hard long hours to provide a good home for us.

We were brought up to respect each other, our family

and our neighbors.

We would do chores to help out and my area of expertise was yard work.

First it was the push mower, then it was the new gas mower, which

was like the push mower only you didn’t have to lean into it like you

were on the line of the Forty-niners.

Football and baseball were listened to on the radio and when

Willie Mays came to bat you stopped what you were doing, you

listened and cheered when it sailed out of Candlestick Park.

Music was very much a part of our lives and it was always playing

on the record player or radio.

The great orchestras, composers, classical and contemporary, like

Henry Mancini,  Sing Along with Mitch, folk singers, Peter, Paul & Mary

the Herb Alpert Band, lots of musicals, Hello Dolly and

movie themes like Born Free and the Magnificent Seven.

A total eclectic exposure to our musical world in the time of my youth

plus my folks favorites, Patty Page, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby,

Eddy Fisher, the Glen Miller Band and on the clarinet, Pete Fountain.

My Mom provided a great home for us and nothing delighted her

more than the holidays!

Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, the 4th of July and every known

holiday in between would instigate the appropriate in home

and outside the home theme and decorations.

Great meals were prepared for the major holidays and more

often than not, our home would be the gathering place for our

large family and friends.

Good company, food, music and a joy for the season.

These are the things that weave together a life, my life, your life.
